The Public Defender Division Has Four Attorneys Who Serve As Senior Trial Counsel

The Public Defender Division has four attorneys who serve as "Senior Trial Counsel" across the state. The Senior Trial Counsel are among the Division’s most experienced and able trial attorneys, each with more than twenty years experience as a public defender trial lawyer. Senior Trial Counsel take cases in a number of different offices, and handle most of their cases with less experienced public defenders acting as co-counsel. Senior Trial Counsel serve either as "lead" counsel or as "second chair" to their less experienced colleagues. Working with Senior Trial Counsel presents an excellent learning opportunity for less seasoned trial attorneys. In addition to their casework, every three months the Senior Trial Counsel lead statewide brainstorming sessions: "case crunching." Although attorneys with less than three years experience as public defenders are required to participate in case crunching, veteran trial attorneys also attend.
